Benzoin resin absolute is a brownish-yellow thick oil that has a rich, warm sweet aroma and the first whiff will remind you of vanilla. The liquid benzoin is extracted from the bark of the tree where the alcohol is removed, leaving a concentrated tincture that is known as a resin absolute. It has a valued place in incense, cosmetics, soaps and perfumes, while serving well as a fixative, preservative, and a sweet base note in aromatherapy blends.
Benzoin resin is used in cough and cold remedies to ease breathing. As an expectorant, it warms and tones the heart and circulation. Benzoin resin is also used to treat inflammatory skin conditions, and to heal cuts and scrapes.
Benzoin blends well with coriander, black pepper, cypress, frankincense, ginger, jasmine, sandalwood, and rose. It is often used in tinctures, and excellent in massage blends. When used in aroma lamps and vaporizers, it benefits breathing.
