Lemon essential oil is expressed from the peel of the fruit. The scent is light and clean with a bright citrusy tang. It can refresh the mind and improve mental clarity as well as uplift one's mood.
Lemon is a good astringent to use in gargles for sore throats. Being high in vitamin C, it is used in alternative medicine to help build immunity against colds, influenza, and other viral infection, to detoxify the body, and as a tonic for the digestive system, immune system, and skin. There is a belief in Ayurvedic medicine that lemon purifies the liver.
Lemon oil blends especially well with
neroli, benzoin, chamomile, geranium, lavender, sandalwood, juniper, frankincense, rose, eucalyptus,
fennel,
neroli,
and ylang-ylang. Add it to diffusers to disinfect and freshen the air, or a few drops to purify a glass of water. It's a fun addition to blends, when you wish an energizing refreshing lift and it will also serve as an astringent for facial care.
